A three-story addition to an owner designed and custom built home in northeastern illinois.
I was asked to serve as an architectural consultant for this structural addition. The plan calls for the addition of a walk-out root cellar, expanding the current basement and foundation. The first floor space extends to two stories. The building section has been designed to allow a view from the master bedroom out to the backyard and river that marks the edge of the site. The roof slopes respect the existing house, which is inspired by the asymmetrical vernacular seen in the agricultural and farming communities. The new structural members are steel and clad in painted maple. Built on to the main sunroom is a screened-in porch space with facing swinging chairs anchored to the roof joists. At the west elevation of the addition is a pergola which is sized to support future deck construction.
