Laboratory Addition

Growth room, seeding, cold storage, and devitalization functions to support greenhouse research

My responsibilities as project architect were to conduct room requirement meetings with laboratory user groups, coordinate the schematic design booklet and drawing set with civil, structural, and MEP engineering consultants, code review, and research building products and materials for specification. Due to the unique design of the growth room the schematic design phase also included meeting with local fire safety officials regarding sprinkler requirements.

The 15,000 SF addition presented many layout challenges due to the equipment and industrial process. This equipment included custom fabricated growth rooms remotely fabricated in the Netherlands, new and existing seeding conveyors and applicators, cart sanitation area, autoclaves and hydroclaves for devitalization area, a mechanical mezzanine, and a recessed cold storage room; all requiring fork truck access.
